Until 1952, the „A.I.D.” was an international meeting place for emigrated dancers, dance and cultural scientists and ethnologists studying subjects such as physical culture, anthropology and community concepts. By connecting and keeping files on non-European dance practise, European folk dance, modern dance forms and theory and history of movement culture, the „A.I.D.“ launched a project aimed at the rediscovery of physical knowledge which also meant to challenge out-dated knowledge systems. The project was realised in cooperation with the "Centre national de la danse" and resulted in this publication and a conference which took place on 28 March to 2 April of this year. Its main topic was the visibility and development of the A.I.D.’s holdings. The German version of the volume will be out soon.

Today we perceive our bodies, senses and movement cultures from a new angle in the context of modern age cultural history. Knowledge in the 21st century is no longer a constant but often defined by specific experiences. Fundamental changes within these knowledge cultures result in new concepts for the production and filing of such forms of experience. This volume shows different approaches in art and science in the attempt to create new bonds between movement and the preservation of the legacies of the past in present times.
